How can the ALS app support the provision of aids?

The ALS app serves as a direct link between patients and the ambulance partner care network, which is linked to medical supply stores and specialized manufacturers of ALS aids. This network provides aids that are used for speech and writing deficits (communication aids), manual function (environment control and arm robots) and movement of the entire body (transfer and mobility aids).

Medical technology to support breathing (ventilators) and coughing (cough assistants) is also supplied via the ALS app – and the underlying care network. The ALS app is also in contact with medical supply stores that specialize in movement trainers and therapy devices (therapeutic movement devices, therapy tables, sit-to-stand aids, etc.). The need for a specific aid can be communicated to the coordinators of Ambulanzpartner via the ALS app in various ways. A list of frequently used aids is available for this purpose. Alternatively, the need can be reported by email, via the app’s telephone function or via the integrated chat function.

A special feature of the ALS app is the automatic generation of care recommendations. This is based on an algorithm developed by ALS experts at Charité and other leading German centers. This is based on the patient’s answers to the ALS function scale, which should be completed by the patient in the ALS app at least once a month. Depending on the symptoms and motor limitations indicated there, a personalized care recommendation is created.

The provision of aids via the ALS app follows a clearly structured process of the outpatient partner care network. First, the reported need is checked by the coordinators. After consulting with the patient, they forward the request to the relevant supplier. There, they confirm the availability of the aid and, if necessary, test it. The attending physician is then contacted to confirm the medical necessity and issue a prescription.

The ALS app offers a status display in the “My medical aids” category for patients who have their medical aids care coordinated via the outpatient partner care network. This documents all key steps in the care process with date and explanation, including the specification of the aid, the responsible provider, the prescribing doctor and the current processing status. In addition, each request is given a ticket number that enables it to be clearly assigned in the event of queries.

Overall, the ALS app is an additional and “mobile” option on your own smartphone to communicate the need for assistive devices, receive recommendations for suitable assistive devices and connect to the outpatient partner care network.
