Is there an ALS-specific speech therapy?
Similar to physiotherapy and occupational therapy, it is advantageous if the speech therapist has specialized experience in the treatment of ALS patients. The assessment of disease progression and the targeted adaptation of therapy to the altered course of ALS are advantageous. At the same time, especially in rural areas, it is unlikely that speech therapists will be able to specialize in ALS. Speech therapy is also useful and beneficial in this situation.
All speech therapists are highly qualified in the treatment of speech and swallowing disorders, which are present in a similar way in common diseases (e.g. stroke) and rare diseases (such as ALS). This means that speech therapists who have no specialized experience in ALS can transfer their experience in the treatment of common diseases to the treatment of ALS.
