How should the Riluzole suspension be used?
The riluzole suspension (Teglutik®) is a liquid with the consistency of a “nectar” and is provided in a bottle. Taking the suspension is recommended if there is a severe swallowing disorder or a feeding tube (PEG) is present. I
n the case of a PEG, it is not advisable to crush film-coated tablets (“crushing”), as the PEG tube can be damaged and the complete absorption of the necessary dose of riluzole cannot be guaranteed. Riluzole suspension is therefore the appropriate and established dosage form for PEG. Riluzole suspension is also taken twice a day. In the morning and evening, 10 ml of the solution is taken from the bottle and taken “per os” (by mouth) or applied via the PEG. 10 ml of the suspension contains 50 mg riluzole.
When ingested via the mouth (as with enamel film), a temporary numbness may occur in the mouth, which is comparable to the anesthetic feeling after a visit to the dentist. The effect varies greatly from person to person, lasts for a few minutes (up to 1 hour) and should not be considered critical in any case. This effect is not to be expected if the medication is ingested via the PEG.
