Do I have a faster or slower progression of ALS?
The ALS Functional Rating Scale (ALSFRS-R ) can be used to determine whether disease progression is faster or slower. One criterion for assessing the progression of the disease is the decrease in ALSFRS-R scale points per month.
If the total score of the ALSFRS-R decreases by more than 1.5 points per month, an above-average dynamic can be assumed. A decrease of more than 2 scale points per month indicates a high rate of progression. If the decrease is less than 0.5 scale points per month, it can be assumed that ALS progression is below average.
The ALS functional scale alone cannot be used as the basis for assessing the individual prognosis. Other prognostic criteria – in particular weight progression as well as respiratory and coughing function – are other important parameters that must be taken into account when assessing the progression of ALS.
