What is the relevance of vital capacity?

A vital capacity below 50% of the normal value requires respiratory support. In certain constellations (e.g. rapid decrease in respiratory capacity or symptoms of respiratory effort), the initiation of respiratory support is already justified at a vital capacity below 70% of the normal value.
