How long does the genetic diagnosis of SOD1 take?

The duration of the genetic diagnosis of the SOD1 gene varies depending on the laboratory and the
technique used. On average, the processing time is around four to eight weeks. In
specialized laboratories, the diagnosis can be carried out more quickly. A more comprehensive
genetic test,
which also includes other ALS-associated genes
in addition to the SOD1 gene (e.g. in the form of a genetic diagnostics panel or by exome sequencing),
often takes six to twelve weeks.

Genetic counseling can be a critical step. One challenge is the limited availability of human genetic counseling (by an institute or a specialist practice for human genetics) before and/or after genetic diagnostics. Therefore, Ambulanzpartner’s ALS Genetics Program offers referrals to human genetics centers that specialize in ALS genetics and have resources available for counseling and diagnosis.
