How is the onset of symptoms of ALS defined?

The onset of symptoms is defined by weakness and/or slow, uncoordinated
movements of the arm or leg or a speech and/or swallowing disorder or
respiratory weakness (hypoventilation). Motor symptoms without
functional impairment, in particular fasciculations, muscle wasting (atrophy) without
accompanying weakness or reflex changes alone are not classified as initial symptoms
