How and why should a swallowing disorder be documented in the ALS app?
A reduction in swallowing can be recorded using the ALS functional scale (ALSFRS-R-SE). Self-assessment of the ALSFRS-R is possible via the ALS app. The “ALS questionnaire” is offered on the start page of the ALS app. The questionnaire comprises a total of twelve questions on typical symptoms of ALS, which can be answered in less than 5 minutes. Questions 2 and 3 are particularly important in connection with the swallowing disorder. These questions relate to swallowing functions and salivation. A monthly survey of the ALSFRS-R-SE is recommended.
This data is of great interest for “self-monitoring”, but also for the doctors treating the patient and for ALS research. The systematic recording of swallowing difficulties has the advantage that the trend of a swallowing disorder is already recognizable and the progression over time is documented. This information can be helpful for nutritional therapists in the outpatient partner care network, but also for the treating physicians, in order to be able to make a decision on nutritional therapy.
