Does PMA have a different prognosis compared to typicalALS?

PMA is characterized by two prognostic features: The rate of progression (the rate at which muscle weakness spreads) on statistical average is lower in PMA. However, the limited transferability of any prognostic statistics to individual cases is critical. Aggressive forms of PMA are also known, which can lead to a high degree of muscle wasting and early involvement of the respiratory muscles. It is therefore not justified to classify PMA as a slower form of ALS. The decisive prognostic factors in PMA are also the change in the ALS Functional Rating Scale (ALSFRS-R) and respiratory function. The second prognostic feature is that the tongue and pharynx may be left out for a long time or completely.
