Digital care during the coronavirus pandemic: communicating requirements for medical aids and medication online

The reliable supply of aids and medication is crucial for people with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and other neuromuscular diseases. At the same time, transportation and travel restrictions during the coronavirus pandemic can make it more difficult to provide outpatient care. To ensure outpatient care, Ambulanzpartner offers patients the opportunity to document their care needs “online” and thus “start” the care process themselves.

Digital support for the provision of medical aids

The online notification of a need for care is created via the personal account on Ambulanzpartner.de and forwarded to the case management of Ambulanzpartner in this way. From there, the notification of need is sent to the special outpatient clinic or specialist practice. There, the medical examination of the need for care is also carried out digitally. The care request is then forwarded to a suitable provider, such as a medical supply store for medical aids, a pharmacy for required medication, a nutrition team or medical supply store for required nutritional products. After forwarding the care requirements, the provider contacts the patient by the preferred method, by telephone, text message or email. After personal contact, the time and place of delivery of the required assistance is agreed.

All care partners in the outpatient partner care network are aware that patients with neuromuscular diseases belong to the risk group for the Covid-19 pandemic. The corresponding protective measures are taken into account by the care providers.

Digital support for the supply of medication

The reporting of medication requirements is particularly critical and is only suitable for the continuation of existing medications. The notification of medication requirements is checked twice: by the attending physician and the pharmacist in a network pharmacy that specializes in the care of patients with ALS and other neuromuscular diseases. Every supply of aids, nutritional products or medication requires a medical decision and a prescription or order. The main purpose of the digital care request is to save time and enable the necessary and appropriate care to be obtained from home (without physical contact with an outpatient clinic, pharmacy or medical supply store). The focus is on arranging care from home (in the situation of self-isolation due to the pandemic).

It should be emphasized that the digital supply request is an additional service alongside the telephone demand report.

Video instructions for online supply request

The online supply request for aids, nutritional products and medication is not “self-explanatory”. The ordering of supplies was originally intended for professional coordinators who have a specialist and medical background. In connection with the Covid-19 pandemic, we have decided to open the platform not only to coordinators but also to patients who are confident in using the platform. To this end, two explanatory videos (“tutorials”) were created to guide patients and their relatives through the platform and provide guidance on documenting care needs.
