How can I find out my phenotype classification?
ALS phenotypes are usually determined in outpatient clinics or specialist practices that specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of ALS . Neurology specialists working there classify the disease according to the location of symptom onset, propagation and motor neuron symptoms (OPM classification). This classification is recorded in the medical documentation and made recognizable in doctor’s letters for the patient’s perspective. The OPM classification also plays an important role in research.
In studies such as the biomarker study on neurofilaments (NfL-ALS study), it is an integral part of the study protocol. It is determined and documented in parallel with each blood sample taken to determine the NfL values. For patients participating in this study, the OPM classification is also stored in the ALS app. There it is visible on the start page and can be supplemented by annotated explanations to provide patients with better orientation and an understanding of the course of the disease.
