What is genetic counseling?
Genetic counseling on mutations often takes place in two stages. The first consultation is carried out by the
doctor (e.g. in an ALS center). In a second stage,
additional genetic counseling can be arranged by a specialist in human genetics or by a
specialist in neurology with a qualification in specialist genetic counseling
. This counseling is strongly recommended in the presence of pathogenic genetic variants
. It contains information on the possible genetic risks for first
and second-degree relatives that may result from the mutation. Genetic counseling by specialists in human genetics is also offered for these
family members.
