Why is the SOD1 gene of particular relevance in ALS?

Mutations in the SOD1 gene are therapeutically relevant, as the detection of a genetic
change in this gene opens up the possibility of therapy with the drug Tofersen .

Tofersen is suitable for ALS patients who have an SOD1 mutation. The frequency
of SOD1 mutations is around 2% of all people with ALS in Germany. It should be noted,
that the majority of mutation carriers have no family history of ALS. Therefore,
genetic testing for SOD1 is generally recommended for all those affected.
