What are the special features of prescribing cannabis-containing medication for ALS?
Before the first use, an application must be made to the health insurance company for the costs to be covered. The application process for cannabis-containing medication begins with a doctor’s prescription. A doctor must provide the medical indication. However, the health insurance company must approve the assumption of costs before the first prescription is issued. At this point there is a difference to other medications, which do not generally require approval. For the approval of medicines containing tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD), an application is submitted that contains a detailed justification for the therapy.
The health insurance fund usually has three to five weeks to review the application. In certain cases, an assessment by the Medical Service (MD) may be necessary. After the review, the application is either approved or rejected. Medicines containing THC are only dispensed by pharmacies, are subject to strict controls and must be carefully documented.
