How are the genetic findings communicated?
The genetic findings are communicated as part of genetic counseling. In the case of
the presence of pathogenic (ALS-causing) genetic changes, the
medical effects as well as the possible psychological and social burdens
that may be associated with the identified mutation are presented. At the same time, reference is made to
corresponding offers of help. Genetic counseling also includes
information on the options available if the mutation is in a gene for which a genetic
therapy has been approved or is being investigated in clinical trials. The counseling also
refers to the limitations of genetic diagnostics, which are due to unanswered questions in the
current state of medical science.
