What are remedies?
The term “remedy” is somewhat misleading in the case of ALS. Historically, the term was used for medicinal products. Since the beginning of the 20th century, the meaning of the term has been fundamentally changed, being used in German social law as a synonym for physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy (voice, speech and language therapy).
In the current state of medicine, a “cure” for ALS is not possible. Therefore, the conceptual implication of “cure” is also inappropriate. The physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy referred to are supportive measures to maintain or improve bodily functions and promote social participation.
Due to the misleading terminology, the word “remedies” should only be used in a formal context (remedy prescription, remedy catalog, remedy provider). Alternatively, the individual forms of therapy (physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy) should be named, indicating the objective of the therapy in an appropriate manner.
